Hungarian honey production is in crisis: drought and imported honey complicate the situation
An increasingly serious problem in our country is the drastic decrease in honey production, the main causes of which are the drought and the dumping of cheap, low-quality imported honey from abroad. Beekeepers struggle with these challenges every year, while the number of bee colonies is also outstanding worldwide. Speaking to Pénzcentrum, the editor-in-chief of the Agricultural sector, Lajos Braunmüller, said that not only the weather, but also low purchase prices and regulatory deficiencies are causing serious problems for the sector.
Drought and weakening of bee colonies
The merciless drought weather of the summer of 2024 significantly reduced honey production in Hungary. Due to the long, hot periods, the quantity and quality of the flowers declined, which meant that the bees could collect less nectar. The blooming of sunflowers and wildflowers was particularly affected, many plants withered.
“The bees themselves need nutrients, so they consume the honey they produce, which further reduces the amount that beekeepers can collect”
Lajos Braunmüller told Pénzcentrum.
Drought weather affects not only honey production, but also the condition of bee colonies. Weaker bee colonies are more exposed to various bee diseases, which can further worsen the sector’s situation. Although the situation is not as serious compared to 2022, the honey harvest has decreased significantly this year as well.
