Lidl has achieved a new record market share of 7.4%, while Aldi remains the fastest growing retailer with sales up 24.4%, according to new data by Kantar.

Lidl reported a 22% rise in sales year-on-year, with both discount grocers, opening new stores across the UK.

Asda’s sales also increased by 6.1% ahead of the sector,  keeping its share steady at 14.0%. Kantar added that Big 4 grocer Tesco’s market share sat at 27.2%, reporting a 3.9% rise in sales.

Sainsbury’s saw sales increased by 4.3%, whilst symbol group retailer the Co-op achieved 6.0% market share and increased sales by 3.5%.

Waitrose’s market share also sat at 4.5%, with frozen-food retailer Iceland reporting a 6.1% growth in sales, with its share remaining at 2.3%

Ocado’s market share was also slightly down at 1.7%, research revealed.

Kantar head of retail and consumer insight, Fraser McKevitt said: “We’re seeing yet more evidence of the coping strategies shoppers are adopting to mitigate rising costs, and in particular own label sales are growing at pace, now up 11.7% year on year.

“The cheapest value own label lines have soared by 46.3%, but people still want to find room for treats at this time of year and this is driving growth at the other end of the spectrum too. Premium own label sales are up by 6.1% to £461 million in November.”

The news comes as grocery inflation in the UK dipped in November for the first time in nearly two years, but remained near record highs.
