New proposals for allowing plant-based meals in public catering
The National Association of Plant-Based Food Producers and Distributors (NÉGYOSZ) submitted its comments to the Ministry of the Interior on Regulation 37/2014 regulating public catering. (IV. 30.) in connection with the amendment of the EMMI decree. In its submission, the association requested the expansion of plant-based diet options in public catering.
NÉGYOSZ emphasized that the current regulation, which stipulates the mandatory presence of proteins of animal origin, does not allow the necessary daily amount of protein to be provided entirely from plant sources. According to the association, ignoring the plant-based diet in the face of the challenges of the modern age, such as sustainability and health considerations, puts Hungary at a competitive disadvantage.
In its response, the Ministry of the Interior acknowledged that a plant-based diet has many health benefits and stated that the purpose of the decree is to ensure a healthy and acceptable diet in public catering, which does not impose a disproportionate burden on the service providers concerned. The ministry also emphasized that regulation must adapt to changing social expectations.
In the future, NÉGYOSZ will continue its work in the field of promoting plant-based foods and representing interests. One of their latest initiatives is a plant-based training program for chefs working in public catering, which promotes the practical implementation of a plant-based diet in public catering.
