Agricultultural products are expensive

In April 2008 the producer price level of agricultural products was 32.6% higher than in April 2007. The price level of crops and horticultural products increased by 41.9% while that of live animals and animal products by 20.1%.

 

The producer price level of
agricultural products went up by 36.2% in the first
four months of 2008 compared to the same period of the
previous year as a result of the price
rise of crops and horticultural products by 49.4% and that of live animals and animal products by
19.6%.
In April 2008 the producer prices of
cereals rose significantly, by 78.0% – amid low trade turnover –
compared to April of the previous year. The producer prices of
potatoes fell by 25.6% following the considerable price increase
measured last year. In the fourth month of the year the prices of
fresh vegetables diminished by 2.4%, which reflects different price
tendencies regarding different kinds of vegetables. More
specifically, in case of onions only a slight producer price decrease
(0.8%) could be observed. The average producer price level of
cucumber decreased more significantly (12%), while the producer
prices of radish rose by 19.5% compared to April 2007.
The 45.4% increase of fruit prices was
dominantly caused by the price rise of apples; in this period the
producer sales of the other fruits can be considered as
insignificant.
The 18.6% producer price increase of
animals for slaughter stemmed from the price increases of poultry for slaughter, pigs for
slaughter and cattle for slaughter by 24.5%, 19.5% and 2.0%
respectively.
Within the 22.3% price rise of animal
products, the producer price of milk rose by 24.7% and that of hen
eggs by 17.5% compared to April of the previous year.
In the first four months of 2008 the
average producer prices of cereals surged significantly, by 81.8% compared to January–April of
the previous year. The producer prices of potatoes, however, were
down by 12.2% after an increase of 71.7% registered in the first four
months of 2007. The producer prices of vegetables went up by 6.4%,
while those of fruits by 59.1% compared to the corresponding period
of the previous year.
The producer prices of animals for
slaughter were 14.2% higher than in January–April 2007. A significant price increase was observed
in case of poultry for slaughter (23.9%), a lower one for pigs for
slaughter (10.4%), while a price decrease occurred in case of cattle
for slaughter (3.2%). The producer prices of animal products rose by
28.2%; more specifically, the producer price of milk went up by
32.9%, and that of hen eggs by 14.6% compared to the first four
months of the previous year.
