The consortium formed by Pannon University and the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences financed the project aimed at the development of a high-tech plant science knowledge and service center with a non-refundable grant of more than HUF 900 million from the European Union and the Hungarian government.

The development took 6 years

The goal of the investment, which began in 2016 and has now been completed, was to create a complex infrastructural background in Keszthely that meets the scientific requirements of the 21st century, in the area of plant sciences serving the development needs of the agricultural sector. Thanks to the developments, the research center can successfully join the European and wider international scientific circulation – they wrote. As part of the project, a 1,000-ton potato storage building, necessary for the storage experiments of potato varieties, was built, a climate house was built, which enables the cultivation of experimental plants under special ecological and climatic conditions, and about 50 laboratory instruments, research and development tools and equipment were purchased. Developments in IT were supplemented with investments.

Research and innovation

The investments contribute to the high-quality service of the genetic research needs of horticulture, arable crop cultivation, and plant breeding, and can also offer laboratory instrumental services to university or external research groups and development companies. The better infrastructure enables the universities to participate in several EU research programs, and the university students and researchers can learn the use of the most modern research tools in practice, it was explained in the announcement.
