The garlic crop grew last year
Last year, 5,611 tons of garlic were harvested from 829 hectares in Hungary, 8 percent more than the previous year – according to the summary of the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI), according to which the size of the heads of garlic decreased this year due to the drought, but at the same time the crop is of good quality.
According to KSH data, the cultivation area and yield of garlic shows a decreasing trend: the yield was between 5.2 and 7.9 thousand tons in the last five years. The import of garlic increased by 19 percent to 1.87 thousand tons between January and August this year compared to the same period of the previous year. From Spain, 153 percent more garlic than a year ago (1.31 thousand tons), but at the same time 82 percent less garlic (73 tons) arrived from the Netherlands.
Annual exports are 400-680 tons, which are mainly directed to neighboring countries
In the first eight months of this year, garlic exports fell by 41 percent to 272 tons in an annual comparison, according to the publication. According to the publication, AKI points out that, based on Eurostat data, Spain sells the most fresh garlic on the internal market of the European Union, followed by the Netherlands by orders of magnitude. Compared to last year’s base, Spain delivered 5 percent (67.7 thousand tons) and the Netherlands 16 percent (17.5 thousand tons) less garlic to the Community market in the first eight months of 2022. The Community is a net exporter of garlic in terms of third countries: the export 76 ,1 thousand tons, the import was 50.1 thousand tons in 2021. The Union’s fresh garlic exports increased by 2 percent to 45.8 thousand tons in the first eight months of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year, while imports increased by 10 percent to 41.1 thousand tons.
28 percent more garlic (27.2 thousand tons) arrived from China in the indicated period. Egypt became the second most important supplier, from which 11 percent more (8.9 thousand tons) of garlic arrived at the same time. They note that Egypt (unlike China or Argentina) can supply garlic to the European Union without import duties.
