NAK: drought is causing problems for agriculture in most of the Great Plain
The weather has been extreme in recent weeks, the drought was already causing problems for agriculture in most parts of the Great Plain by the beginning of May – the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK) explains in the summary published on its website on Friday.
According to the summary, most of the Transdanubia area was hardly lacking in precipitation, during the previous 30 days, 40-60 millimeters more precipitation fell in the northwest than the long-term average, while 20-30 millimeters less in the Tiszántúl region. Enough rain fell only in small areas east of the Danube, mainly in the northern part of Bács-Kiskun County and Hajdú-Bihar County. At the beginning of May, the lack of precipitation was the most severe in the southern part of the Great Plain and the northeastern part of the country, they wrote.
Although this is not typical for the spring months, similar to several countries in Europe, storms threatening ice have formed in Hungary, and four supercells have formed in recent weeks. The risk of ice damage was strongest in the northwestern part of the country and in the counties of Bács-Kiskun, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén and Tolna in the last week of April and the first week of May.
During this period, reports of ice were received from the counties of Baranya, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Pest, Tolna, Vas and Zala, the NAK said.
