Magnum, from sustainable source only
Magnum, one of the world’s most popular ice-cream brands, has launched two new chocolate ice-creams made with cocoa from Rainforest Alliance certified™ farms in Ecuador and Ghana. Called Magnum Ecuador Cocoa and Magnum Ghana, these two new products are starting to appear in the shops In Europe from the summer.
Magnum Ecuador, covered with dark chocolate made with 62% cocoa from Ecuador and containing vanilla ice-cream with a dark swirl of chocolate sauce also made with cocoa from Ecuador, and Magnum Ghana cocoa made with 36% pure cocoa and hazelnut ice-cream with chocolate sauce, are the first Unilever ice-cream brands to be Rainforest Alliance™ certified. Last year Ben & Jerry’s, part of Unilever’s ice-cream portfolio, announced its intention to Fairtrade certify every ingredient that can be certified by 2013.
Research conducted as part of the development of Magnum Ecuador and Magnum Ghana showed that consumers associate sustainability with high quality, a more natural taste and being made with great care, as well as being good for cocoa farmers.
Unilever will source cocoa sustainably for our Magnum ice cream by 2015. All other cocoa will be sourced sustainably by 2020. We buy 1% of global production, 95% of which is used in our ice cream, including Magnum, our biggest global ice cream brand, and impacts over 40,000 cocoa farms. All other ice-cream ingredients will be sourced from sustainable sources by 2020, as part of Unilever’s overall goal of sourcing 100% of its agricultural ingredients from sustainable sources by 2020.
