The head of the ministry added that, despite the extraordinary difficulties this year, the autumn works can be carried out safely. This is due to the fact that the situation of farmers has strengthened in recent years, and this year they were supported by extraordinary government measures to help with financial liquidity.

István Nagy explained that in the first week of November, the work on all fall-sown field crops was over 90%

This year’s autumn sowing area of 1.63 million hectares is 8% more than the figure for 2021, and 3.3% higher than the average of the last five years, which is encouraging for next year’s crop prospects. A significant reorganization can also be observed between the individual plant species, in addition to the decline in the area of rapeseed, the area of winter barley, rye and winter wheat increased spectacularly. The area of 1 million hectares of winter wheat is almost 13% larger than last year and exceeds the five-year average by 4%. The area of autumn barley also shows a significant increase of over 20% compared to previous years, 332 thousand hectares were sown with it this year. In parallel with the autumn sowings, the autumn soil works in preparation for the spring sowings are also taking place, by the first week of November they reached about 40% completion, which also strengthens the good prospects for the following year – the minister pointed out.

The weather of the past few weeks has been favorable for autumn sowing, the sown rapeseed, barley and wheat fields are developing properly. Thanks to the optimally prepared seed bed, the mild autumn weather and the incoming rainfall, the autumn-sown plants got off to a promising start.
