Due to the lack of rainfall and heat waves, the yield of the five main grain crops – wheat, barley, rye, oats and triticale – fell significantly: the harvested amount did not reach 6 million tons, the average yield was 4.4 tons per hectare – the Central Statistics Office informed Office of the MTI on Wednesday.

In the announcement, it was highlighted that the production volume of the most important ear crop, wheat, was 4.2 million tons this year, a decrease of 21 percent compared to 2021. Meanwhile, the harvested area of wheat increased by 6.5 percent to 951,000 hectares compared to last year, they added. They explained that significant differences had developed within the country. The biggest drop in both quantity and proportion was in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county, where the harvest was halved, despite the fact that they harvested a 16 percent larger area. In the eastern counties with the best yield average – such as Hajdú-Bihar and Békés – the yield also decreased by almost half. In contrast to the above, in Tolna County, an unprecedented amount of wheat, more than 300,000 tons, was harvested in three years, 6.8 percent more than last year. The harvested crop also increased in Zala county, they said.

The average yield of rye, oats and triticale decreased by 9, 22 and 24 percent compared to the previous year

According to the KSH, the yield of barley decreased by 10 percent this year, which can largely be explained by the higher 2021 base. Looking at five years – compared to the 2017-2021 average – the harvested quantity increased by 7.8 percent, to more than one and a half million tons. 57.6 thousand tons of rye were harvested on 19.1 thousand hectares, 37.6 thousand tons of oats were harvested on 15.8 thousand hectares, while 171.6 thousand tons of triticale were harvested on 50.1 thousand hectares – they said. According to the office, adequate domestic supply is ensured : based on the trends of the past years, the total consumption does not even reach half of the amount produced in the given year.

In the announcement, they also mentioned that the drought caused problems in several European countries. Much less precipitation fell than average in the countries east of Hungary – Romania, Moldova, Ukraine – as well as in Italy and the south-eastern areas of France.
