The government is not leaving pig farmers alone, it is helping them mitigate their market losses with compensation. All farmers who keep slaughter pigs in areas restricted due to the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMD) and were able to sell their animals for less than the officially established average market price are eligible for support. The amount of compensation can be up to 40% of the price difference. Claims must be submitted to the district offices. Due to the foot-and-mouth disease disease, thousands of pigs ready for slaughter could not be slaughtered in our country. In order to address this problem – thus to help pig farmers in areas subject to further restrictions – the government issued Decree No. 82/2025 on special livestock sector measures.
If a farmer sells his animal to the slaughterhouse for less than the average market price, he may be entitled to compensation, up to a maximum of 40%
All farmers keeping slaughter pigs in this area are entitled to compensation. Applications must be submitted electronically to the veterinary department of the regional office responsible for the area by the 10th day of the month following the month in question. The documents required for the application are: a certified copy of the invoice issued by the farmer and a copy of the delivery note (ENAR 2611 form) of the farmer’s copy. It is also necessary to attach a copy of the veterinary certificate “Animal health certificate from the farm” specified in the Regulation on the veterinary rules for the domestic transport of live animals. The district offices will provide all assistance in compiling the papers. The compensation has already started, and 25 applications have been received from pig farmers. The government’s goal is to compensate all farmers in need effectively and quickly and to mitigate the economic damage caused by foot-and-mouth disease.
