The company behind bourbon whiskey brand Jack Daniels has signed a 30MW power purchase agreement (PPA) in north-west Kansas.

Sprits and wine producer Brown-Forman said the firm would buy power from the Solomon Forks wind project in Kansas, covering 90% of the company’s annual electricity usage

The 15-year PPA was signed with developer Infinity Renewables. The 474MW project also has a 100MW PPA with US retailer Target, agreed in August 2017, and a deal for 160MW with communications firm T-Mobile.

The Solomon Forks project is due to come online in 2019.

Brown-Forman claimed to be the first spirits and wind producer to enter in to a renewables power purchase agreement in the US.

Other drinks companies, including Anheuser-Busch InBev — the maker of Budweiser beer — have previously agreed wind power deals.

Brown-Forman is targeting a 23% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions, from 2012 levels, by 2023.
