There will be no shortage of fish, but the price of carp is very high
There will be no shortage of Hungarian fish during the Christmas season, but carp will be much more expensive this year than a year ago.
The domestic lake farms do not have an easy year, the extreme drought and the drastic rise in costs have left their mark on production. This year, an unprecedented water shortage has developed in the domestic lake farms, due to the drought of the past two years, the water level of the fish ponds has dropped dangerously low in many places, and some waters have completely dried up. In addition to feed, the increase in the price of fuel and electricity also put a heavy burden on fish producers. Many fish producers were forced to reduce production due to input material prices, as they could not finance the amount of planting that was usual in recent years. For this reason, much less fish than usual came out of the lake farms this year, the Magyar Nemzet points out.
During the Christmas period, Hungarian fish can be found in all department stores, market halls and other places of sale. There will be no shortage of carp, but the price of live fish has risen by about 40 percent. Carp costs between HUF 1,800 and HUF 2,200 per kilo this year
– quotes István Németh, the president of the Hungarian Aquaculture and Fisheries Interprofessional Organization.
