Asparagus exports increased in 2024
According to Eurostat data, the asparagus cultivation area in Hungary has decreased in the past decade, and in 2024 it was around a thousand hectares. The harvested quantity of asparagus also decreased, amounting to 4.61 thousand tons in 2024. The season started in mid-April this year.

According to KSH data, the foreign trade surplus of fresh or chilled asparagus increased to 3.64 billion forints in 2024 compared to 3.02 billion forints in the previous year. Exports increased by 18 percent in volume to 2.65 thousand tons, and by 20 percent in value to 3.77 billion forints. The largest buyers of Hungarian asparagus in the period under review were Germany (938 tons, -25 percent), Slovakia (816 tons, +100 percent) and Switzerland (356 tons, -27 percent). According to AKI PÁIR data, white asparagus appeared on the Budapest Wholesale Market’s offer two weeks later than last year, in the 16th week, at the most common price of 4,000 forints/kilogram, and then in the 17th week, green asparagus also at the price of 4,000 forints/kilogram. In the 18th week, both white and green asparagus were offered at the price of 3,000 forints/kilogram.
