It will take 1-2 years for things to get back to normal!
László Kovács, president of the Guild of Hungarian Restaurateurs (MVI) talked to our magazine about the state of play in the hospitality sector and possible scenarios for the near future.
Things are going in a bad direction: the president predicts that 70 percent of the bars and restaurants in the inner districts of Budapest can go bankrupt. HoReCa units in the countryside are more likely to survive, as they are less dependent on foreign tourists.
The future is uncertain, but one thing is for sure: if there is no tourism, fewer hospitality units will be enough. There are no major organised at the moment and catering businesses are losing hope. Mr Kovács is of the opinion that it will take 1-2 years until things get back to normal.
MVI does its best to help enterprises in this difficult situation. He believes that a hospitality chamber should be established – building a future for the sector would be easier with its help, but only if it would have the necessary mandate and rights! The president thinks the VAT on food home delivery should be reduced to 5 percent if it is the restaurant staff that delivers. //
