Most popular segments became more expensive by 7-11 percent in one year
According to Nielsen, retail sales of coffee was up by 5 percent in value, surpassing an annual HUF 50 billion in August 2008-July 2009, compared to the same period in 2008. In terms of volume, sales stagnated at 26,000 tons. Two thirds of total sales were realised by ground roasted coffee in the past two years. Today 3in1 is the second most popular segment, with an 18 percent market share in the examined period. The average consumer price of the four most popular coffee varieties increased by 7-11 percent. Weighted with volume sales, the average consumer price of one kilogram of ground roasted coffee was HUF 1,722 in July, 7 percent more than a year ago. Coffee is in the top 10 food categories out of the 90 measured by Nielsen. Private labels’ market share was 14-17 percent in the first six months of 2009. As for volume sales, stores larger than 400 m² realised 65 percent of sales.
