The layer of the soil close to the surface has dried up a lot in the past week or so, but it still has a good supply of moisture, which created favorable conditions for the emergence and initial development of autumn cabbage rape, HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They explained: the warm, dry, good harvesting period that lasted for almost a week was closed by a frontal system that arrived on Tuesday, as a result of which light rain also occurred in several places. Thanks to the significant rainfall that fell in mid-September, the amount of precipitation for the past thirty days in most parts of the country exceeds the long-term average, while in large areas of the Great Plain it is around or slightly below the average.

The middle 20-50 centimeter layer also contains plenty of moisture in Transdanubia and the northern part of the country, but in the Great Plain only the top 20-40 centimeters got wet in mid-September, the layer deeper than half a meter is still extremely dry in the eastern two-thirds of the country. The temperature was higher than usual at this time, until Tuesday the air warmed up to around 25 degrees Celsius during the day, but on clear nights, especially on the weekend and Monday, the temperature dropped below 10 degrees, and in places prone to cold, the temperature fell below 5 degrees. On Wednesday, the dawn was significantly milder, 11-15 degrees were measured, but the degree of daytime warming dropped by several degrees.

The often rainy weather in mid-September temporarily hindered the harvesting of sunflowers and corn and worsened the quality of the already poor harvest. However, the drenched soil throughout the country created favorable conditions for the emergence and initial development of autumn cabbage rape.

According to the forecast, the weather will remain changeable, and even larger amounts of precipitation, exceeding 20 millimeters, are expected over the weekend, mainly in the southern and eastern parts of the country. By the end of the week, the upper part of the soil is expected to dry out in the northwest, while in the east and south it may even become significantly wet. The temperature on Friday will still be summer-like high, between 25-30 degrees, then the air will start to cool from Saturday, and from Sunday the maximum values are expected to be below 20 degrees. During the first days of next week, the air will cool below 10 degrees at night, and below 5 degrees in the frost corners.
