Tesco wins the “OMÉK Food Waste Prevention Award”
Tesco has earned the “OMÉK Food Waste Prevention Award” at the National Agricultural and Food Exhibition and Fair (OMÉK) for its inventory and handling practices. As a result of its actions, in just two years, the company was able to reduce its food surplus by 3,000 tonnes.
Tesco serves an average of 3 million customers a week in its 204 stores in Hungary. With such a volume, food waste and surpluses will inevitably be generated: the experience of the supermarket chain food waste mainly generates in supermarkets, where critical points can be identified from stocking through to filling up the consumer’s habits. The purpose of the supermarket chain – besides education – is to reduce the amount of surplus generated and to donate as much of the surplus as possible to charitable purposes.
