Pumpkin: a versatile and healthy winter treat
Pumpkin is a favorite vegetable of the autumn and winter months due to its characteristic taste, and is a popular addition not only to the table but also to home decor. This plant, originating from Central America, was a staple food during the time of the Aztecs and Mayans, and thanks to discoveries, it has become one of the most popular seasonal vegetables in Europe. Pumpkin is now a fundamental element of Hungarian gastronomy, which can be used as an ingredient in many dishes, drinks, and even spirits.
Health and nutrition
Pumpkin is not only delicious, but also extremely healthy. Its high vitamin A content has a beneficial effect on vision and skin health, while its vitamin C strengthens the immune system. The potassium it contains helps regulate blood pressure, while its fiber content promotes digestion. Antioxidants protect cells from harmful free radicals, reducing the risk of many diseases.
Although many people believe that frost sweetens pumpkins, in fact, cold weather turns the starch content into sugar, which makes them sweeter. Newer varieties are less dependent on this process, as they are genetically sweeter.
A variety of uses
Pumpkins can be used in countless ways in the kitchen: grated raw into salads, baked or boiled as an ingredient in soups, side dishes and desserts. Some creative entrepreneurs are even making pumpkin distillate. Although it cannot officially be called brandy, pumpkin distillate offers a unique gastronomic experience with its special flavor – in which pumpkin and some melon can be recognized.
Pumpkin is easy to store. It can last for months in a dry, cool place, provided that it is not washed before storage. The natural waxy layer helps preserve the freshness of the pumpkin.
