The government is committed to global food security
For the Government of Hungary, food security is of strategic importance, and the fact that good quality food is on the table of the Hungarian people. On the occasion of World Food Day, the Ministry of Agriculture was represented by Dr. It was represented by Oszkár Ökrös, Deputy State Secretary for International Affairs.
The war conflict, the energy crisis caused by the failed sanctions in Brussels and this year’s extremely dry weather presented a huge challenge to domestic plant growers and livestock keepers. This is why, for example, the Drought Emergency Operational Tribe was created, which decided to quickly help farmers. As a first step, we created a package of measures, as part of which we decided on a credit moratorium, and we provided a HUF 3 billion feed delivery subsidy for livestock keepers in trouble. In addition, HUF 1.4 billion in additional subsidies were set aside to support the increased energy costs of state irrigation works serving the irrigation of agricultural areas. Insurers must pay a claim advance for drought insurance within 14 days of reporting the claim. In addition to these tools, we want to reduce to 3 percent the annual interest rate of the Agrár Széchenyi Kártya Overdraft, which can be newly taken out by all livestock keepers and plant growers with drought damage certified by government agencies, with a maximum interest subsidy of 14 percent.
In 1979, the FAO declared October 16 as World Food Day based on a Hungarian resolution proposal
The purpose of the event is to mobilize international cooperation and governments to solve the food problems affecting a significant part of the world. Every year since 2006, the Hungarian Food Bank Association draws attention to hunger and poverty by launching a donation convoy. In the promotion, trucks loaded with food donated by the partners of the Food Bank pass through Budapest. Today’s event organized on the occasion of this year’s World Food Day was attended by Vladimir Rakhmanin, Deputy Director General of the FAO, and Antal Molnár, Vice President of the Hungarian Food Bank Association.
