Will people born after 2010 no longer be able to buy tobacco products in the EU?
The European citizens’ initiative called “Call to achieve a smoke-free environment and the first European smoke-free generation by 2030” will be registered, the European Commission announced on Wednesday.
The organizers of the initiative ask the committee to make a legislative proposal in order to protect the new generations from tobacco addiction, to act against the related environmental dangers and smoking.
They want the commission to propose legal measures to ban the sale of tobacco and nicotine products to Europeans born after 2010. They also call for concrete measures to create a European network of no-nonsense beaches and national parks, to expand outdoor smoke-free spaces, and to completely ban tobacco advertising.
The content of the initiative has not yet been examined by the EU committee at this stage, but the request meets the conditions set out in the relevant legislation and is legally acceptable.
